Fabric cutting planner

Use What You Have. Calculate What to Buy.

Enter the rectangular cut list from the quilt you are already making, measure fabric you have on hand, and get one reconciled shopping and cutting plan. Optional pattern yardage is compared against a separate fresh-fabric scenario.

Fabrics

Describe your project fabrics

Add each fabric once, then record its usable width, fabric on hand, and optional pattern reference.

Cut requirements

Build your cut list

Tab through each row. New rows keep the last fabric and size mode; every dimension remains visible and editable.

Paste from spreadsheet

Paste CSV or tab-separated spreadsheet values. The format is detected automatically. Include the header or use this exact column order:

CSV and tab-separated spreadsheet values are supported.

How the cutting planner works

Inputs and assumptions

Group rectangular pieces by fabric. QuiltClarity converts finished sizes to cut sizes once, uses the width left after selvages, and respects fabric direction plus piece-level rotation and orientation choices. You do not need to create a digital quilt design first.

Worked example

Twenty-four 3½ × 6½ inch cut rectangles fit six across 40 inches of usable WOF when rotation is allowed. Four 3½-inch strips use 14 inches before safety allowance and upward purchase rounding.

How to audit the answer

The shopping list, assumptions, strip instructions, diagram, and text alternative all come from the selected deterministic layout. Compatible groups may share otherwise unused row width, while the result remains a practical heuristic rather than a proven global minimum. Read the full calculation methodology.
