How this calculator works
Assumptions
Row-wise sashing · No cornerstones · No outer sashing. Finished block and sashing sizes gain seam allowance when converted to cut sizes.
Methodology
Vertical pieces equal the gaps in every block row. Horizontal pieces span each completed row and sit between rows. The calculator totals their cut lengths, includes the fabric consumed by WOF-strip joins, adds a separate handling/cutting buffer, counts WOF strips, and rounds the purchase upward.
Worked example
Five columns by six rows of finished 12-inch blocks with 2-inch sashing finish at 68 × 82 inches. The layout needs 24 vertical sashing pieces and five horizontal rows; those 68-inch horizontal pieces require joins on 40-inch usable fabric.
Limitations
This focused calculator covers the construction method and rectangular measurements described above. It does not infer a complete quilt pattern or replace method-specific instructions.
Common question
Can I change the defaults? Yes. The visible defaults are planning conveniences; use the measurements and assumptions that match your fabric, method, and quilting setup.
