How this calculator works
Assumptions
All dimensions are finished dimensions. Only whole rectangular blocks are counted. Optional sashing sits between blocks, with no outer sashing, and uses the same finished width horizontally and vertically.
Methodology
Without sashing, each target dimension is divided by the matching block dimension and rounded upward. With sashing, the calculator solves for the smallest whole number of blocks whose combined block and between-block sashing dimensions meet the target.
Worked example
A 60 × 72 inch target made from finished 12-inch blocks needs five blocks across and six down: 30 blocks total. Because both divisions are exact, the finished block field is exactly 60 × 72 inches before borders.
Limitations
This focused calculator covers the construction method and rectangular measurements described above. It does not infer a complete quilt pattern or replace method-specific instructions.
Common question
Can I change the defaults? Yes. The visible defaults are planning conveniences; use the measurements and assumptions that match your fabric, method, and quilting setup.
