How this calculator works

Assumptions

This is for straight-grain or cross-grain double-fold binding, not bias binding. Strips are cut across the entered usable fabric width and joined end to end. The editable joining allowance covers joins, corners, and finishing overlap.

Methodology

Quilt perimeter is twice the width plus twice the length. The joining allowance is added, the result is divided by usable width, and the strip count is rounded up. Strip count multiplied by cut strip width gives the fabric length before safety and upward purchase rounding.

Worked example

A 60 × 80 inch quilt has a 280-inch perimeter. Add 12 inches, then divide 292 by 40 usable inches: eight whole strips. At 2½ inches wide, those strips consume 20 inches before any safety allowance or shop rounding.

Limitations

This focused calculator covers the construction method and rectangular measurements described above. It does not infer a complete quilt pattern or replace method-specific instructions.

Common question

Can I change the defaults? Yes. The visible defaults are planning conveniences; use the measurements and assumptions that match your fabric, method, and quilting setup.
