How this calculator works
Assumptions
Piece dimensions can be cut sizes or finished sizes. Finished sizes gain seam allowance on every edge. Usable width excludes selvages; directional fabric prevents rotation even when rotation is otherwise allowed.
Methodology
The calculator tests every legal row orientation, counts whole pieces across the usable width, and rounds the required row count upward. It uses the shorter valid layout, adds the selected safety percentage, then rounds the purchase up to the selected shop increment.
Worked example
For 24 cut pieces at 3½ × 6½ inches on 40 inches of usable fabric, rotation allows six pieces across in four 3½-inch rows. That is 14 inches before the safety allowance; with 5% safety and eighth-yard purchasing, buy ½ yard.
Limitations
This focused calculator covers the construction method and rectangular measurements described above. It does not infer a complete quilt pattern or replace method-specific instructions.
Common question
Can I change the defaults? Yes. The visible defaults are planning conveniences; use the measurements and assumptions that match your fabric, method, and quilting setup.
