How this calculator works
Assumptions
Overage is added to all four sides. The editable 4-inch default is a longarm-oriented planning convenience, not a universal rule. This tool does not calculate pieced batting.
Methodology
The calculator adds twice the side overage to each quilt dimension. When a roll width is supplied, it checks both allowed orientations and reports the one requiring less linear length.
Worked example
A 60 × 80 inch quilt with 4 inches per side needs batting 68 × 88 inches. On a 72-inch roll, place the 68-inch dimension across the roll and cut 88 inches of linear length.
Limitations
This focused calculator covers the construction method and rectangular measurements described above. It does not infer a complete quilt pattern or replace method-specific instructions.
Common question
Can I change the defaults? Yes. The visible defaults are planning conveniences; use the measurements and assumptions that match your fabric, method, and quilting setup.
