How this calculator works
Assumptions
Fabric width is the crosswise axis and length is the lengthwise axis. Enter the physical rectangle you actually own. Finished piece sizes gain seam allowance before placement; cut sizes do not.
Methodology
This uses the same bounded deterministic finite-stock geometry engine as the project planner. The visual layout shows actual selected placements and practical rectangular leftovers; it does not promise a globally optimal packing.
Worked example
An 18 × 21 inch fat-quarter-shaped rectangle can practically hold twelve 5-inch squares in the locked test fixture. The diagram identifies every placed square and the remaining rectangular regions.
Limitations
This focused calculator covers the construction method and rectangular measurements described above. It does not infer a complete quilt pattern or replace method-specific instructions.
Common question
Can I change the defaults? Yes. The visible defaults are planning conveniences; use the measurements and assumptions that match your fabric, method, and quilting setup.
Keep planning
Plan more than one piece
Combine all the rectangles for each fabric into a shopping list, cutting list, and visual layout.
