How this calculator works
Assumptions
This calculator requires the conventional 2:1 finished width-to-height proportion. Trim-friendly mode adds squaring room. The four-at-a-time method is not described as no-waste.
Methodology
The selected method determines whether each batch uses one body rectangle and two background squares or one body square and four background squares. Batch counts round upward and expose produced extras.
Worked example
Twelve finished 4 × 2 inch geese made four at a time need three batches. In trim-friendly mode, cut three 5½-inch body squares and twelve 3⅛-inch background squares; trim the twelve units to 4½ × 2½ inches unfinished.
Limitations
This focused calculator covers the construction method and rectangular measurements described above. It does not infer a complete quilt pattern or replace method-specific instructions.
Common question
Can I change the defaults? Yes. The visible defaults are planning conveniences; use the measurements and assumptions that match your fabric, method, and quilting setup.
